SD Card Formatting Options on a Garmin Automotive Device

At times it may be necessary to format an SD card in any of the following Garmin devices:

• Camper/RV 785
• Camper/RV 890
• Camper/RV 1090
• dēzl™ 780
• dēzlCam™ 785
• dēzl™ LGV/OTR 800
• dēzl™ LGV/OTR 1000
• Overlander®

To Format the Memory Card:

NOTE: The Camper/RV 785 and dēzlCam™ 785 have an additional SD card slot for camera/video storage. See Formatting the Camera microSD Card or Map microSD Card on a dēzlCam™ 785 or Camper/RV 785.

1. From the main page touch Settings,  or 

2. Touch Device (skip this step on some devices)

3. Touch Storage & USB

4. Select your memory card

5. Touch the menu icon (three vertical dots)

6. Touch Settings

7. Select your format preference

Two Options to Format the SD Card:

NOTE: Formatting erases all data currently stored on the SD card. To avoid losing the data, consider backing it up.

• • • Eject - For safely unmounting the card from the device. When formatting, the SD card must be mounted again when prompted.
    • Format (Format as portable storage) - Recommended
      • For moving photos and other media between devices
      • Formatting the card as Portable Storage treats the card as intended, removeable storage.
    • Format as internal - Not recommended as it may make the card unreadable by Garmin applications
      • For storing anything on this device only, including apps and photos. Requires formatting that prevents it from working with other devices.
      • When formatting as internal storage, before the card can be used for a different device it has to be formatted, which can cause data loss if items are on the card that can be used universally.

8. Touch Erase and Format

9. Touch Done

If the SD card was previously formatted as Internal, and you want to change to Format as Portable Storage, follow the steps below:

1. Follow steps #1-5 above.

2. Touch Format as portable

3. Touch Format

4. Touch Done
