Garmin Connect: What Criteria Determines a Personal Record?

Each time that you upload data from your Garmin device or create an activity that surpasses one of your previous personal records, that achievement will be noted. Criteria for each record type is listed below.

Steps:

  • Wear the watch to track steps.

  • Step data you sync from your watch must surpass previously recorded data for each category such as:

    • Most Steps in a Day

    • Most Steps in a Week

    • Most Steps in a Month

    • Longest Goal Streak

Running:

NOTE: Activities from third party applications (such as Zwift) do not qualify for PRs and cannot be manually assigned as a PR

  • The activity must be recorded on a Garmin device to earn a PR.

  • Indoor and outdoor activities can qualify for PRs as long as the Garmin device is recording distance, using the watch's internal sensors in the case of a treadmill run.

  • A PR or personal record is your fastest time covering a specified distance. Garmin Connect will track records for 1 mile/kilometer, 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, and farthest distance for running.

PRs detected by the device will be uploaded and compared to your current PRs on your Garmin Connect account once the activity is uploaded.

If the uploaded activity contains no PRs reported by the device then Garmin Connect will evaluate the activity to see if the total distance meets and barely exceeds the distance of the closest PR distance. When the total distance of that activity exceeds the PR distance by a significant amount, you will need to set the PR manually within the activity summary page.

Cycling:

  • The activity must be recorded on a Garmin device to earn a PR.

  • Indoor and outdoor activities can qualify for PRs as long as the Garmin device is recording distance, using a speed sensor for an indoor bike ride.

  • A PR or personal record is your fastest time covering a specified distance. It will also track records of 40 miles, farthest distance, and most elevation gained for cycling.

Swimming:

NOTE: Swimming personal records must come from a compatible swimming watch. For details see  Garmin Connect: Personal Records for Pool Swimming Activities

  • Garmin Connect can display Personal Records (PRs) for swimming from watches that support Swim PRs. These PRs will display for the fastest time over certain distances while pool swimming.

  • Swimming PRs must be set in a single interval without rests.

  • Swimming PRs can be recorded in either yards or meters.

  • Pool swim PRs can only be set by swimming the exact PR distance.

  • Swimming PRs can only be done in the Pool Swim activity profile.

Strength:

NOTE: Strength activities can be edited in Garmin Connect to add weight records, but other activity types cannot be edited to make them personal records.

  • The activity must be recorded on a Garmin device to earn a PR.

  • To surpass your previous Strength PR your weight must increase for the following exercises:

    • Barbell Back Squat

    • Barbell Bench Press

    • Barbell Deadlift

    • Barbell Row

    • Overhead Barbell Press

Keep in mind that you can manually assign a PR. Manually added PR times will display the total time for the activity. Activities that are automatically assigned as PRs in Garmin Connect will display the time for the PR distance.

You can choose if you want to share your personal records with others in your privacy settings.
