Descent Phase

DESCENT TO 10,000 FT. AGL

During the descent phase of flight, the range should be set between 60 NM and 80 NM, depending on your aircraft’s ground speed and the desired area to be explored. Tilt should initially be set to show minimal ground clutter while observing for strong precipitation returns to “walk out” of the ground clutter. Figure 24 shows a typical amount of ground clutter. ACT may be activated to reduce the workload during initial descent.

TILT: To show minimal clutter

RANGE: 60-120 NM

DESCENT BELOW 10,000 FT. AGL

Below 10,000 ft. AGL, adjust the range to between 40-60 NM and adjust the tilt to UP 7.50° - 10.00°. This provides for minimized ground clutter while observing for precipitation returns in the arrival area.

TILT: UP 7.50° - 10.00°

RANGE: 40-60 NM
