IOA_GFTP error in MapSource when sending or receiving maps

Description

The IOA GFTP error usually occurs when trying to download a map to the GPS unit without having selected any map sets in MapSource® mapping software. This can also occur when trying to upload a map set from a unit without maps on it.

Resolution

Make sure the MapSource program is up to date. MapSource program can be updated from this link.

Once updated, in MapSource software, try to select map sets and try the download again.

Selecting and Loading maps:

  1. Zoom to about 100-150 miles over the area interested in (50-70 miles if using US TOPO)
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click the Map Tool
  4. Move the cursor over a section of the map
    • To verify, there is a yellow outline around the individual map areas
  5. Left click the mouse on the map areas when highlighted in yellow
    • The background should now turned pink indicating that area has now been selected
  6. Click on the Maps tab that is to the left of the map
    • At the bottom it will indicate the number of maps selected and the total size used by the selections
  7. Click Transfer
  8. Click Send To Device
  9. Verify the correct GPS unit shows in the Device drop down menu
  10. Click Send

The process will create a file first, then it will erase any previously loaded maps, and finally it will load the new selection of maps to the memory card, or the internal memory of the unit. Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks are stored separately in the unit and not on the data card or in the internal memory for the maps so they will have to be deleted from the unit manually. Also, Waypoints cannot have duplicate names; no two points can be named the same.

If the unit is a USB device and is not being seen by MapSource program, follow these steps to get to the Device Manager:

  1. Press Windows key + R
  2. Type devmgmt.msc
  3. Click OK

Once in the Device Manager, if a yellow questions mark or exclamation mark is shown, highlight it then follow the steps to install the drivers:

  1. Right click on the device with the yellow highlight
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click the Drivers tab
  4. Click on Update Drivers
  5. Windows XP:
    1. Select No not at this time (if it asks to connect to the internet)
    2. Select the Advanced option and choose from a list
      • Also make sure the little white box that states to include this location has a check mark
    3. Click Browse
    4. Find My Computer
      • If not expanded, click on the plus sign
    5. Click the plus sign next to Local Disk C:
    6. Click the plus sign next to Program Files
    7. Click the plus sign next to Garmin
    8. Click on USB_Drivers
    9. Select the grmnusb.inf file
    10. Click OK
    11. Click Next
  6. Windows Vista and newer:
    1. Select Browse my computer for driver software
    2. Check the box to Include subfolders
    3. Click Browse
      • Should bring up a Browse For Folder window
    4. Expand Computer by clicking on the triangle next to it
    5. Expand Local Disk C:
    6. Expand Program Files (x86)
    7. Expand Garmin
    8. Click on USB_Drivers
    9. Click OK
      • This should close the Browse For Folder window
    10. Click Next
      • Windows should now start installing the USB drivers
    11. Click Close

This should cause the program to go to that file and load the needed drivers. If this does not work, then:

  1. Right click on the device
  2. Click on Uninstall drivers
  3. Turn off the unit
    • Wait a few seconds
  4. Turn the unit back on
  5. When the found new hardware wizard appears, go through it using the same as the above steps

Once the maps are properly selected and the drivers are installed, the IOA_GFTP error should not appear.
