Why a zūmo Device Is Not Charging

NOTE: zūmo models that have not been used for an extended period may take a longer time to power on when connected to a power source and indicate they are charging. The device may power on and immediately power off like it is rebooting and then power back on.

Garmin's zūmo models will only charge when certain conditions are met.

  • When connected to a motorcycle mount, the zūmo will only charge if it is powered on. If the zūmo is placed in sleep/standby mode (if available) or powered off, then it will not charge.

  • When connected to an automotive mount and connected to the proper vehicle power cable, the zūmo will charge regardless of whether it is on or in sleep/standby mode (for those models that have this feature). The device will not charge in off mode and must be powered on to charge. If your device is not powering, go to the Garmin Support Center for related troubleshooting and information:

    • Enter your product name in Garmin Support Center

    • Click on the Search for a solution box under Choose a Topic

    • Type and search for keywords like "not powering on"

    • Click on the appropriate FAQ referencing "Frozen or Not Powering On"

  • When connected to a powered mount and the mount is wired correctly, the zūmo should automatically power on, even if the battery is completely discharged. Once the device is powered on, it will begin charging. If the zūmo does not power on within a few seconds, perform a soft reset.

    • To perform a soft reset, hold the power button for up to 30 seconds while connected to the powered mount.

  • When connected to a computer via a USB cable, the zūmo should charge at all times but at a very slow rate, as long as the USB cable is plugged directly into the device. Plugging the USB cable into the mount will not charge the zūmo.  Charging via a computer is not recommended.

  • When connected to a 2 AMP AC power adapter, the zūmo should charge when on or in sleep/standby.  The device will not charge in off mode.

Temperature and exposure to sunlight can also prevent battery charging. If the zūmo gets too warm or too cold, the battery will no longer charge as a means of preventing overheating.

Differences Between an Automotive Mount and a Motorcycle Mount

  • An automotive mount is used in a regular vehicle instead of a motorcycle, typically via suction cup, and receives power with a 12 volt Vehicle Power Cable. See example automotive mount kits below:

  • A motorcycle mount is used on a motorcycle, typically via the handle bars. The device receives power from a motorcycle power cable wired into the bike and connected through the mount. When the device is placed on the mount and powered on, it will charge. See example motorcycle mounts below:
