Rear Tire Tips When Using a Wheel-On Trainer
With a wheel-on trainer, the rear tire of the bike is used to turn the resistance unit on the trainer. Set up is important as it will improve your indoor experience (power measurement, noise and cycling feeling). See below for some tips, tricks and help on setting up your wheel-on trainer.
NOTE: Do not use an indoor training tire outdoors on the road.
Benefits of Using a Trainer Tire versus a Regular Tire
Garmin® recommends the use of a special trainer tire instead of a regular outdoor tire on your Tacx® trainer setup. The trainer tire is specially designed to withstand the high pressure and high temperatures arising while training. Other benefits include:
Longevity
The compound of a trainer tire is harder and will not wear as quickly as an outdoor tire.
Slippage
Trainer tires are designed to have the most traction on the roller of a trainer to prevent slippage when sprinting or standing.
Noise Reduction
The surface and rubber compound of a trainer tire are designed to reduce noise and vibration.
Precision
A training tire will result in more accurate data.
Recommended Tire Pressure
Rear tire pressure should be set to the maximum pressure allowed. For tire pressure guidelines refer to your wheel and tire manufacturer for the maximum rated pressure for the system.
Solving a Tire Slippage Issue
Confirm tire pressure is set to recommended maximum pressure listed on the tire's sidewall.
Clean the tire using mineral spirits.
What Size Tires Will Work With a Wheel-on Trainer?
Tacx wheel-on trainers will work with a variety of tire sizes. The maximum compatible tire size is 700 x 32c (622-32).
Are Tacx Trainer Tires Compatible With Hookless or Tubeless Rims?
Tacx trainer tires are not compatible with hookless rims. They can be used on tubeless compatible rims with hooks by using an inner tube. Consult your wheel manufacturer for further information.
