Approach Phase

Setting the range to 20 NM and the tilt angle to UP 7.50° - 10.00° will allow you to explore the air mass surrounding the approach, the airport area, and the missed approach segment. Tilt settings in this range should be adequate to remove most ground clutter from the display (see Fig. 25). If returns are observed in the area, they should be analyzed and assessed before conducting the approach. Increase range, and reference NEXRAD information if available, to determine an appropriate path for approaching the airport, or divert to another airport if necessary.
