Road Surface Type on Edge Cycling Computers

Compatible Edge® cycling computer features the ability to see road surface type in the activity summary on the Garmin Connect™ platform as well as receive warnings for unpaved roads during the ride. The Edge uses data from the built in mapping to determine the road surface type: Paved and Unpaved.

During the Ride

During the ride you will be able to see unpaved roads and receive warnings for unpaved roads up ahead. 

Enable Warnings

  1. Select Menu

  2. Select Activity Profiles. 

  3. Select a Profile. 

  4. Select Alerts and Prompts

  5. Select Unpaved Road Warnings

View Unpaved Roads in Map Details

  1. During the ride on the map data screen:

    • With touchscreen: Select White carat icon on black background with white semicircle above (tray icon) by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

    • With buttons: Press the top right button > Select Map Overlays.

  2. Select Unpaved Roads.

Below is an example of how a gravel road will appear on the map screen with Unpaved Roads enabled in the map details:

After the Ride 

After the ride is uploaded to Garmin connect, you will be able to see the percent of paved vs unpaved surface type in the ride stats. You will also have the option to show paved and unpaved roads on the GPS track of the ride.

GPS Overlay

  1. In the GPS map of the activity summary, select Two squares stacked on top of each other (Connect App) or Three squares stacked on top of each other (Connect Web).

  2. Select Road Surface.

Surface Percent

In the Stats section of the ride summary, you will be able to view the share of the ride that was paved vs. unpaved.
