HRM-Pro and Pro Plus: Top FAQs About the Activity Tracking Feature

The HRM-Pro™ and HRM-Pro™ Plus monitors can provide supplementary activity tracking data by recording heart rate, calories, intensity minutes, and step data when your Garmin Watch or Edge® Cycling Computer cannot be worn or used. This data can be sent to your Garmin Connect™ account without having to first sync with another Garmin Watch or Edge Cycling Computer. Select the following topics to jump to them.

NOTE: The HRM-Pro/Pro Plus cannot be a Primary Wearable or Primary Training Device. It is required a Primary Wearable compatible watch be paired to your Garmin Connect app, along with your HRM-Pro/Pro Plus.

What Happens if I Have a Watch or Cycling Computer With My HRM-Pro/Pro Plus?

If you have a compatible watch or cycling computer, the HRM monitors will also share the activity tracking data with the Garmin Connect app and your paired device using the TrueUp™ synchronization feature. This allows for cases when you might not be able to wear your watch during team sports or martial arts, but you still want to capture this data.

To ensure this data is captured make sure of the following:

  1. Make sure the heart rate monitor (HRM) is paired with the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Make sure you are wearing your HRM and be near your phone at the end of your activity. (Opening the Garmin Connect app on your phone will also cue a sync.)

    • The HRM-Pro/Pro Plus can store up to 18 hours of activity data before being overwritten.

What Happens if I Am Wearing the Strap and My Watch at the Same Time?

The TrueUp synchronization feature in Garmin Connect ensures activity tracking data for the same time period from multiple devices does not get counted twice. Your watch will continue to be the source of your steps data while being worn.

When not recording an activity with the watch, if you wear the watch and strap at the same time, the all-day heart rate data in your Garmin Connect account comes from the watch that is listed as your Primary Wearable in Garmin Connect. While recording an activity and wearing both devices, the heart rate data from the strap will be used on the activity file. Any metric that relies on heart rate (such as intensity minutes or calories) will use the strap heart rate data, but other metrics like step data will come from the watch.

Can the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus Automatically Create a Timed Activity in Garmin Connect When I Am Wearing It?

No, the HRM-Pro and Pro Plus heart rate straps do not have the ability to record a timed activity. If you want a detailed activity record, you must start the activity using the compatible Garmin Watch or Cycling Computer first.

Can I Turn Off the Activity Tracking Feature on the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus?

You can only effectively turn off the activity tracking feature of the strap by removing it from the Garmin Connect app. There are two reasons to have the HRM-Pro paired with the Garmin Connect app:

  • To sync activity-tracking data

  • To send firmware updates to the HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus

Firmware updates for the HRM-Pro and HRM-Pro Plus are also sent to any Garmin device that is paired to the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus. If there is a firmware update for the HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus, your Garmin watch or Edge cycling computer will prompt you to apply that update.

NOTE: The HRM-Pro/Pro Plus will only connect to a watch while actively recording an activity. If you are wearing the watch and not recording an activity, all day tracking data comes from your watch. If you are not wearing your watch but are wearing the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus, the strap will record step data and other wellness data for the time frame that the watch was off the wrist. If there is no data from the Primary Wearable, Garmin Connect will show the data synced from the strap, and the TrueUp synchronization feature will keep your watch updated. You do not have to unpair the strap from the watch, all you need to do is sync both devices to update the data.

I Am Missing Data From My HRM-Pro/Pro Plus in My Connect Account

There are a couple different reasons that data may be missing after syncing the strap.

  • There is no Primary Wearable linked to the account.

  • The HRM-Pro/Pro Plus is attached to a second account.

If the HRM-Pro/Pro Plus is connected to multiple accounts, the strap will be unable to sync data properly. The resolution is to remove and re-add the strap to your account you want to sync with. Refer to this FAQ for steps to remove and re-add the HRM from Garmin Connect: Remove and Add a Device From the Garmin Connect App.
