Index S2 Scale: Power to Weight Ratio Widget
Index S2 scale users that have cycling functional threshold power (FTP) data in their Garmin Connect account can enable a widget on their scale in order to see the power to weight ratio of their FTP.
Requirements to use this feature include:
- Own a compatible Forerunner or Edge device that supports connection to a power meter sensor or smart trainer.
- Own a power meter or smart trainer for your bike.
- Have an FTP value stored in your Garmin Connect account. For more information see: What Is the Functional Threshold Power Feature on My Garmin Device?
What Is Power to Weight Ratio?
Power to weight ratio is a way to compare absolute power numbers with other riders and is simply how much power per kilogram the cyclist is capable of generating. The higher the number the better. For this feature, we are looking at the Power to Weight Ratio of your FTP. However, it can also be applied in other areas, such as comparing absolute power values between riders during a segment or over an entire ride that they did together.
How Do You Calculate Power to Weight Ratio?
If you have an FTP value, your power (watts) is divided by your weight in Kilograms. See the image below for an example:
Why Should I Be Interested in Power to Weight Ratio?
As a cyclist, you may be interested in knowing how much power you can generate per kilogram of body weight. Ideally you want as high a power as your weight can generate. However, losing too much weight might cause you to lose muscle or power. Gaining too much weight without adding power will also cause the ratio to go down. Power to Weight Ratio is also a good way to objectively compare your performance to others.
What Is a Good Power to Weight Ratio for My FTP?
Males (W/kg) | Females (W/kg) | |
Superior | 5.05 and greater | 4.30 and greater |
Excellent | From 3.93 to 5.04 | From 3.33 to 4.29 |
Good | From 2.79 to 3.92 | From 2.36 to 3.32 |
Fair | From 2.23 to 2.78 | From 1.90 to 2.35 |
Untrained | Less than 2.22 | Less than 1.89 |
How Does My Power to Weight Ratio Change?
This metric will change as your weight changes or as your FTP changes. Each time you stand on the scale or record a new FTP, the ratio will update.
Can I See My Progress in Garmin Connect?
