How Do I Setup My Garmin Alpha 100?

Before heading out with your system, we recommend that you set it up and make sure it's ready to use.


Charging

You will first want to make sure that both the Alpha® 100 and your collar(s) are properly charged1. The Alpha 100 requires the battery to be present to transmit.

Charging the Alpha 100

  • Here are the Instructions to Charge the Handheld
    • If the battery is not in your Alpha 100 handheld already, you must insert it before you can charge your Alpha
    • Charging your Alpha handheld may take around 2 hours to fully charge and should be performed at room temperature
    • Charging is complete when the battery charge level icon stops flashing

Charging the Collars

Pairing

After your handheld and collars are fully charged, you can turn them on and pair them. Tap Dog List, if you have no collars listed or not all collars listed, you will want to pair them to your handheld.

  • If you purchased an Alpha 100 bundle with TT™ 15 or TT™ 15 mini they should already be paired to the handheld
  • Additional collars will need to be paired

    TIP: Enter the dogs in the order in which you'd like to most to see them

Pairing a New or Additional Collar

  1. If your collar is not paired, turn it off to start.
  2. Turn on the collar by pressing and holding the Power button until the collar beeps twice. 
    • The LED on the collar should be flashing rapidly in green. It is now ready to be paired to the handheld.
  3. On the handheld:
    1. Tap Dog List
    2. Tap + Add Dog
  4. Bring the collar near the handheld and tap Yes
  5. Keep the collar near the handheld until it the handheld gives you the screen to enter the dog’s name
  6. After you’ve entered the dog’s name, tap the  to indicate okay


If you plan to pair collars by using a Track or Train Code from another dog tracking or training handheld, select Pairing with a Track or Train Code below.

Pairing with a Track or Train Code

  1. If your collar is not paired, turn it off to start.
  2. Turn on the collar by pressing and holding the Power button until the collar beeps twice. The
    • LED on the collar should be flashing rapidly in green. It is now ready to be paired to the handheld.
  3. On the handheld:
    1. Tap Dog List
    2. Tap + Add Dog
  4. Bring the collar near the handheld and tap No
  5. Tap Yes when asked if you know the track or train code
  6. Enter Track or Train code and tap 
  7. Keep the collar near the handheld until it the handheld gives you the screen to enter the dog’s name
  8. After you’ve entered the dog’s name, tap the  to indicate okay



Acquiring Satellites

After you’ve added all the dogs you intend to add, it’s best to give the handheld and collars an unobstructed view of the sky to acquire as many satellites as possible, and to familiarize themselves with where the satellites are in the sky. On the collar when you have a good fix you'll see 3 rapid green flashes in a row from the LED.

TIP: If traveling more than a few miles away from where the handheld and collar obtained GPS connection, it is suggested that you repeat this effort again at the new location but before you use them in the field.
