Dog Tracking Collar Shows up with ? on Alpha or Astro Handheld

When tracking dog collars with a handheld unit, a "?" icon may appear on the Compass page, Map page, or Dog Info page (see example images below). This icon indicates that there is a satellite signal or communication problem with the collar. Refer to the sections below for troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.

NOTE: If a "Not Tracking" message appears on the Dog Info page, refer to the following FAQ: Dog Tracking Collar Shows "Not Tracking" on Handheld

Satellite Signal Issues

If the collar is nearby, the most likely cause of the "?" icon appearing will be satellite signal issues. You can determine if this by checking the light on the tracking collar itself. When attempting to connect to the GPS satellite signal the collar will continually emit a single flash. Once connected, this will change to a double or triple flash depending on the signal strength.

Refer to the link below if the collar fails to display a double or triple flash, otherwise continue to the next section of this FAQ.

Communication Issues

If the collar is emitting a double or triple flash but the "?" icon still shows, there is some other communication issue occurring. The following FAQs provide helpful information to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with interference or range:

If the communication issues persist after reviewing these FAQs the next possible cause is a damaged VHF antenna. Replacement antennas are available for purchase on Garmin.com at the following links*:

If the collar continues to display the "?" after troubleshooting for both satellite signal and communication issues the collar will need to be repaired or replaced.
