The error The file 'grmnusb.sys' on Unknown is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and click OK. when installing Garmin USB drivers is caused by the incorrect drivers being assigned to the Garmin device.


Resolution


To correctly associate the Garmin USB drivers: 

  1. Close the Found New Hardware Wizard
  2. Disconnect the Garmin from the computer
  3. Download and install the Garmin USB drivers
  4. When prompted, connect the Garmin to the USB port on the computer
  5. If the Found New Hardware Wizard asks "Would you like to connect to Microsoft to look for updates?" select No, not at this time. and click Next
  6. Click Install from a list or specific location
  7. Click Next
  8. Click to put a check next to Include this location in a search
  9. Click "Browse"
  10. Browse to the C:\Program Files\Garmin\USB_Driversfolder and click OK
  11. Click OK again to continue and then click Finish
  12. Click Next on the Garmin USB Drivers installation screen
  13. Click Done

This will allow the installation program to find the drivers needed.
