Group Messaging in the Garmin Messenger App

The Garmin Messenger™ app supports group message threading and distribution with other Garmin Messenger app users. The app can be used by itself to send or receive messages when cell coverage is available. However, a compatible inReach® satellite communicator must be used to send and receive messages over the Iridium satellite network when no cellphone coverage is available.

How Does Group Messaging Work?

Group messages may only contain cellphone numbers. Garmin Messenger app users will see each others messages in one thread. Contacts that are not using the Garmin Messenger app will receive the initial message individually in their default SMS app, and their replies will be returned as direct messages to the user who started the group message. When adding contacts to a group message, those who are not using the Garmin Messenger app will include a phone icon and Garmin Messenger app users will include a message icon:

Important Notes

• Group messages are limited to 5 recipients and cannot be sent to emails, inReach addresses, or your MapShare™ page. If an email, inReach address, or MapShare is included, or there are more than 5 recipients, the message will be sent as a post instead. Posts are delivered individually, and replies return as direct messages. Naming a group is not available currently.

• Ensure your phone and inReach device are connected before attempting to send a message via satellite. Starting a Group Message

1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

2. Select Messages .

3. Select (Android) or (iPhone).

4. In the To field, enter the recipients' SMS numbers or tap  to add them from System Contacts or inReach Contacts.

   • Ensure SMS numbers are in the following format (minus the brackets): +[Country Code][SMS number].

   • For System Contacts you may need to grant permission for the Garmin Messenger app to access your phone's contacts.

   • Add any additional recipients.

5. Touch the Start a message field, then type out and send the message.
