Obtaining software for the GPSMAP 196, 296, 396, 496 Series

This article pertains to software downloads. For help with database downloads, see Garmin Welcome Kit for assistance.

Updating Software:

In order to update the operating software for the GPSMAP® 196, 296, 396, or 496 handheld navigator, download Garmin's WebUpdater software.  Once the GPSMAP unit is connected to the computer via the USB cable, run the WebUpdater application, which will begin to automatically look for the connected device.  Follow the prompts to update the software. If the WebUpdater program does not work, you will have to download the executable file for the software download and run it for your respective device. Follow the links below to download the executable file:

Note:

  • These software downloads are free of charge.
  • Due to the older connection ports on these devices, it may be necessary to purchase a 2.0 USB Hub to interface between your computer and the navigator. These hubs can be purchased online or at major electronics retailers, and slow the connection speed of data being transferred, allowing you to complete the software download.
