"Can't Unlock Maps" Message on a Garmin Outdoor Handheld
If your Garmin outdoor handheld displays the message Can't unlock maps or Unable to unlock maps, refer to the following to resolve the issue depending on your situation.
I Only Have the Map(s) That Came Preloaded on My Handheld
If your handheld came preloaded with TopoActive, City Navigator®, and/or Public Land mapping, you can try updating or reinstalling the mapping with Garmin Express™ software.

Updating Preloaded Mapping
Connect the handheld to the computer and open the Garmin Express program.
Select the handheld in Garmin Express.
Select Install or Install All.
Reinstalling Preloaded Mapping
Connect the handheld to the computer and open the Garmin Express program.
Select the handheld in Garmin Express.
Select Map Details.
Select Options or Map Options under the TopoActive or City Navigator map.
Select Reinstall Map.
I Purchased and Downloaded Maps Through Garmin.com
NOTE: Map downloads purchased through Garmin.com can be unlocked and used on 1 compatible device only. Data downloaded to a microSD/SD card is associated with the device you select during the download process.
Download and install the latest device software version with Garmin Express program.
Confirm the issue is with the card by powering the handheld off, removing the microSD card and powering it back on. If the message no longer appears, the issue is with the microSD card.
If Your Issue Persists: Follow Information Below Based on Your Circumstance
Card was not purchased directly from Garmin:
Pre-programmed Garmin Map card: Contact the dealer that sold the card to get a replacement.
Pre-programmed third party map card (such an onXmaps): Contact the dealer or company that supplied the card.
