The updated version of the app utilizes a new map engine, therefore previously downloaded maps will need to be re-downloaded once the app has been updated. Maps can be re-downloaded by using the steps below. You can also enable Auto Downloads to automatically download maps whenever you pan to a new area on the map.

Re-Downloading Maps After Updating the Garmin Explore App

A data connection is required for downloading maps. Due to the size of the downloads, it is highly recommended to use a high-speed Wi-Fi connection. Maps downloaded to the Garmin Explore app cannot be loaded to a Garmin device.

  1. Open the Garmin Explore app.

  2. Select an option:

    • Select Down Arrow Offline Maps > Plus Symbol New Offline Map.

      -OR-

    • Select  Unfolded Map Symbol Map > Plus Symbol > Create Offline Map.

  3. Drag the map to view different areas.

Pinch or spread two fingers on the screen to zoom in and out of the map.

Saved items will be visible while selecting a map area.

  4. Swipe up and select which layers to download.

NOTE: Tap Information to the right of a layer for a description. TopoActive maps will also include Relief Shading, SD (Standard Definition) Contour Lines, and Hiking Popularity layers that can be toggled on or off by selecting Three Stacked Layers after the map has been downloaded.
