New Map Features in the Garmin Explore App
IMPORTANT: If the Garmin Explore app is on a version older than 4.0, previously downloaded maps will automatically be deleted and will need to be re-downloaded after updating the Garmin Explore™ app to version 4.0 or later. TopoActive maps, satellite imagery, and USGS quads can be downloaded without a purchase. Additional map layers are available with an Outdoor Maps+ annual plan. New Map Features
To help improve trip planning and navigation, the Garmin Explore app has been updated with new features including:
Enhanced course creator tool
Includes new tools, route calculation options, and the ability to create a course directly from the detail pages of map points (POIs, waypoints). For more details, see - Creating Courses in the Garmin Explore App.
Support for new map functionality

New search feature
- Includes an improved search engine to to search for points of interest (POI) or items in your library. You can also search for addresses when an internet connect is available. For more details, see - Getting Started With the Garmin Explore App Map Page.
The updated version of the app utilizes a new map engine, therefore previously downloaded maps will need to be re-downloaded once the app has been updated. Maps can be re-downloaded by using the steps below. You can also enable Auto Downloads to automatically download maps whenever you pan to a new area on the map.
Re-Downloading Maps After Updating the Garmin Explore App
A data connection is required for downloading maps. Due to the size of the downloads, it is highly recommended to use a high-speed Wi-Fi connection. Maps downloaded to the Garmin Explore app cannot be loaded to a Garmin device.
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select an option:

Offline Maps >
New Offline Map.

Map >
> Create Offline Map.
Drag the map to view different areas.
Pinch or spread two fingers on the screen to zoom in and out of the map.
Saved items will be visible while selecting a map area.
Swipe up and select which layers to download.
NOTE: Tap
to the right of a layer for a description. TopoActive maps will also include Relief Shading, SD (Standard Definition) Contour Lines, and Hiking Popularity layers that can be toggled on or off by selecting
after the map has been downloaded.
Once you have selected the area and layers to download, select Save.
Enabling Auto Downloads
When Auto Downloads is enabled, the Garmin Explore app will automatically download maps whenever you pan to an area on the map without offline maps.
Open the Garmin Explore app.

Touch Auto Downloads to toggle it on.
If the toggle is set to

Touch Download Over, then choose between Wi-Fi Only or Wi-Fi or Cellular for automatic map downloads.
