Best Charging and Storage Practices for Descent Dive Computers
Many Garmin® products use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are not user-replaceable which increases the importance of battery maintenance through proper charging and storage practices. For more information on specific details for your Descent™ dive computer, refer to your owner's manual and search "Device Information."
Best Charging Practices
Below are some best practices when charging your Descent dive computer to help maintain a better battery life.
To help prevent corrosion, thoroughly clean and dry the charging contacts and the surrounding area before charging the device. For more information refer to your owner's manual and search “Cleaning the Device” or “Cleaning the Watch.”
Charge your Descent dive computer using a wall charger or computer.
NOTE: If charging with a computer, make sure the Garmin Express™ program is not actively updating your Descent dive computer before safely ejecting the device. Most Descent dive computers will achieve a full charge in a 1-2 hour period.
A best practice for charging is to follow the 80/20 charging rule.
Lithium-ion batteries prefer to have a charge between 80% and 20% because it is less stressful on the battery.
Lithium-ion batteries prefer not to be overcharged or fully depleted, especially for a long period of time.
Avoid charging in extreme temperatures as this can degrade battery performance. The ideal charging temperature range is between 0º to 45ºC (from 32º to 113ºF).
- It is recommended to use an official Garmin branded charging cable when charging your Descent dive computer.
Following these guidelines can help extend the life of your lithium-ion battery when charging your device.
Best Storage Practices
Below are some best practices for when you are storing your device.
Short Term Storage
After a dive, ensure your device is stored in a well ventilated area to allow any moisture to fully evaporate before sealing the device in a case or bag.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or excessive heat, such as inside a hot car, to avoid damage to the battery.
Long Term Storage
Ensure your Descent dive computer is powered off.
Store in a dry location.
Ensure the storage temperature does not go outside the recommended range for your device. Refer to your owner's manual and search “Specifications” for the recommended storage temperature information for your device.
Store the device with the battery charged around 40-60% to minimize battery degradation over time.
Check the device battery level every 1-2 months and recharge to around 50% if necessary.
Ensure the battery does not fully discharge.
NOTE: If your Descent does fully discharge, place it on the charger and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before trying to turn it on.
Following these guidelines can help extend the life of rechargeable batteries when putting them into long term storage.
