Garmin BaseCamp Not Displaying Elevation Graph

Sometimes Garmin BaseCamp™ software may not show the elevation graph when reviewing a track or route. The elevation graph can depend on the map selected and how the map is loaded in BaseCamp software. For tracks that are created in BaseCamp software to show elevation information, a map with elevation information needs to be selected before creating the tracks.

Maps With or Without Elevation Information

Maps With Elevation Information

Examples include:

  • HuntView Plus
  • TopoActive
  • Topo U.S. 100K
  • Topo U.S. 24K
  • Trailhead Series

Maps Without Elevation Information

Examples include:

  • City Navigator®
  • Garmin Public Land Map
  • Global Map

Viewing the Elevation Graph for Tracks

The elevation graph can be viewed for a track created in BaseCamp software if a map with elevation information was used when creating the track. Tracks that have been recorded on a device and then transferred into BaseCamp software will also show the elevation graph if the device recorded elevation when the track was made. Elevation information is stored in the track file, so this information does not come from the map when viewing the elevation graph in the BaseCamp program.

  1. Double-click a track from the Library to open the track details.
  2. Select Graph.
    • If the track file does not contain any elevation information, you will get a message that there is no elevation data.

      Example

No Elevation Data in the Track

    • If necessary, select the types of data to display.

NOTE: If the track contains elevation information, the elevation graph will display it regardless of the currently selected map in BaseCamp software.

Viewing the Elevation Graph for Routes

If a map with elevation information is selected, the elevation graph can be viewed for routes transferred into or created in BaseCamp software. Elevation information is not stored in the route file, so this information comes from the map when viewing the elevation graph in the BaseCamp program.

  1. Double-click a route from the Library to open the route details.
  2. Select Graph.
    • If you get a message that the current map does not contain any elevation data, select a different map that contains elevation information.

      Example

No Elevation Information in the Current Map

NOTE: The elevation graph for routes will not show on a Windows computer if the selected map is from a microSD/SD card. Maps installed to the computer or in the internal memory of the Garmin must be used. The elevation graph also may not show when using a Montana® 700 series outdoor handheld with newer versions of TopoActive.
