Tracking Contacts and Messaging on the Alpha 200 and 200i Handheld

You can track other hunters in your group and know where they are at all times and send messages to these contacts. The following will show the steps to add and pair an Alpha® 200 and another Alpha® dog tracking handheld for contact tracking and messaging. 

Contact Tracking must be turned on for these features to be enabled, it is turned OFF by default.

Adding a Contact to your Alpha 200

Select your device below:

Alpha 300 or Alpha 300i Handheld

On the Alpha 300

Ensure that tracking is turned on. 

  1. Tap the Power Button.
  2. Select My ID.
  3. Select Transmitting to say On.

Paring with the Alpha 300

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Pair.

On the Alpha 200

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Add.
  4. Select Pair Handheld.
  5. Enter a name for the Alpha 300 contact, when done typing, confirm with checkmark in bottom right of keyboard.
  6. Select Finish.

The Alpha 300 will now show up on the map and the dog compass for tracking. 

Alpha 100 Handheld

On the Alpha 100

  1. From the Main Menu, select Alpha Drawer at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select Contacts.
  3. Select Pair.

On the Alpha 200

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Add.
  4. Select Pair Handheld.
  5. Enter a name for the Alpha 100 contact, when done typing, confirm with checkmark in bottom right of keyboard.
  6. Select Finish.

The Alpha 100 will now show on the map and dog compass for tracking.

Alpha 10 Handheld

On the Alpha 10 Handheld

  1. Press Menu to bring up the main menu.
  2. Select Setup.
  3. Select Transmission ID.
  4. Ensure Status is On.
  5. Make note of the ID number, that will be entered in the second handheld in the next steps.

On the Alpha 200 Handhelds

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Add.
  4. Select Enter ID.
  5. Select the Alpha 10 handheld's ID number.
  6. Enter a name for the Alpha 10 contact, when done typing, confirm with checkmark in bottom right of keyboard.
  7. Select Finish.

The Alpha 10 will now show on the map and dog compass for tracking.


Adding your Alpha 200 to a Compatible Handheld

Select your device below:

Alpha 300 or Alpha 300i Handheld

On the Alpha 200

Ensure that tracking is turned on. 

  1. Tap the Power Button.
  2. Select My ID.
  3. Select Transmitting to say On.

Paring with the Alpha 300

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Pair.

On the Alpha 300

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Add.
  4. Select Pair Handheld.
  5. Enter a name for the Alpha 100 contact, when done typing, confirm with checkmark in bottom right of keyboard.
  6. Select Finish.

 The Alpha 200 will show up on the map and the dog compass for tracking

Alpha 100 Handheld

On the Alpha 200

Ensure that tracking is turned on. 

  1. Tap the Power Button.
  2. Select My ID.
  3. Select Transmitting to say On.

Paring with the Alpha 100

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Pair.

On the Alpha 100

  1. From the Main Menu, select Alpha Drawer at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select Contacts.
  3. Select Add.
  4. Select Yes.
  5. Enter the name of the contact.
  6. Select the Checkmark to confirm. 

Alpha 10 Handheld

On the Alpha 200 Handhelds

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Menu Icon
  4. Select Pairing Setup.
  5. Ensure Transmitting is set On.
  6. Make note of the ID number.
    NOTE: The ID number will be entered in the Alpha 10 in the next steps.

On the Alpha 10 Handheld

  1. Press the Menu key to bring up the Main Menu.
  2. Select Add Device.
  3. Select Contact.
  4. Enter the ID number from the other handheld.
  5. Enter a name for the contact.
  6. Select Done.

Messaging with the Alpha 200

The Alpha 200 and 200i can send preset messages to tracked contacts through VHF communication. This messaging is different from inReach® messaging and does not require a subscription.

Sending Messages with the Alpha 200 or 200i

You can send preset message to all of your connected contacts.

  1. From the Main Menu, select Dog List.
  2. Select the Contacts tab Alpha Contacts near the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Message.
  4. Select from one of the preset messages.

Note: Messages will send to all connected contacts. 

Receiving Messages on the Alpha 200 or 200i

When a message is received it will appear across the top of the screen. To view missed messages,
  • Press the Power button to open the status menu.
  • Select Alerts.

Contact Tracking Range

The Alpha series handhelds have a contact tracking range similar to the dog tracking collars. Expected range for contact tracking is up to 9 miles in optimal conditions.
