How to Reset the eTrex SE or eTrex Solar

There are a few instances in which it may be necessary to perform a full reset on an eTrex® SE or eTrex Solar outdoor handheld, including the following:

  • Not receiving a satellite signal

  • Restoring the factory default settings

  • Not functioning properly

The information and steps below will walk you through backing up your data and resetting.

Before Resetting

Performing a full reset can cause user data loss. User data is waypoints, courses, activities, and geocaches.

It is recommended to back up important data with the Garmin Explore™ app before resetting. For steps, see - Syncing the Garmin Explore App.

If removing data is desired to eliminate corrupt data or free up space, see Related.

Performing a Full Reset

In most cases we recommend using the normal Delete All method found in the device menu (see - Resetting Data and Settings). In some instances this may not be possible, such as if the handheld is in the wrong language. If you need to reset your eTrex device and are unable to use the normal Delete All method, follow the steps below.

  1. Ensure the device is powered off.

  2. Press and hold OK/Upside Down Teardrop, Back Arrow/Menu Button, and Power simultaneously.

  3. Once Garmin appears on the screen, release the Power button.

  4. Wait 2 full seconds, then release Back Arrow/Menu Button.

  5. Wait 2 more full seconds, then release OK/Upside Down Teardrop.

The eTrex device may remain on the Garmin screen for 2-3 minutes before rebooting to the language selection prompt. Select a language, then take the device outside with a clear view of the sky to re-acquire satellite data.
