Garmin inReach SE+ or Explorer+ is Frozen, Won't Power On or Not Working Correctly

Use the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the following issues on your inReach SE®+ or inReach Explorer®+ handheld:

  • Acquiring or keeping a GPS fix
  • Pairing to a companion Android or iOS device
  • Charging or powering on

Soft Reset

This reset can be used if the inReach® handheld is in a state where it appears frozen, or will not power off. 

  1. Disconnect the inReach handheld from any power source.
  2. Press and hold down X and Power simultaneously for 60 seconds.

  3. Release X and Power when the inReach handheld turns off.
  4. Power the inReach handheld on normally.
  5. Sync the inReach handheld with inReach Sync. For steps, see - Updating inReach Firmware and Syncing Account Changes with inReach Sync.
  6. Test the inReach handheld to confirm the issue has been resolved.

Power Connected-Soft Reset

Use this soft reset if the inReach® handheld will not power on.

  1. Connect the inReach handheld to any power source.
  2. Press and hold down X and Power simultaneously for 60 seconds.

  3. Release the buttons.
  4. Disconnect from the power cable.
  5. Power the device on normally.
  6. Sync the inReach handheld with inReach Sync. For steps, see - Updating inReach Firmware and Syncing Account Changes with inReach Sync.
  7. Test the inReach handheld to confirm the issue has been resolved.

Manual Firmware Update

Follow the instructions below to place the inReach SE+ or inReach Explorer+ handheld into Firmware Update Mode which should allow it to connect to a computer and sync.

  1. Power off the inReach® handheld.
  2. Press and hold X, Down, and Power simultaneously.
    Location of the Power, X, and Down buttons on the device
  3. The device will power on into Firmware Update Mode.

  4. Press and release the SOS button and you will see the LED flash Green and Red.
    NOTE: Verify the device is in Firmware Update mode as shown in the image above. 
  5. Plug the device into the computer.
  6. Sync with the inReach Sync app.
  7. Once the sync is complete, unplug the device from the computer.
  8. Power the device on normally.
  9. Test the device to confirm the issue has been resolved.
