Identifying and Utilizing Garmin® Fish Symbols
Like many devices that offer symbols to represent fish, certain Garmin® Marine Devices used in conjunction with a transducer can offer fish symbols. These fish symbols can be adjusted on or off within the device to look like an arch or a fish.
From the Sonar screen > Menu > Sonar Setup > Appearance > Fish Symbols ON/Off
Fish Symbols turned ON | Turning on fish symbols by selecting one of the following options will make suspended targets look like a generic fish. |
Fish Symbols turned OFF | When the fish symbols are turned off on the unit, the device will display an actual representation of the sonar echo. The sonar pulse is a convex wave that emits from the transducer. Garmin Marine Devices will show a perfect arch or half-moon if a fish enters the front of the cone and goes straight through the cone and then out the back. This would cause the echo to get closer to the center causing the arch. If a fish enters the cone and goes out through the side, the device may display a partial arch or just a black spot on the screen. Speed of the boat or if anchored the speed of the fish going through the cone will have an effect on the shape and size of the fish arch, size of the fish arch does not always represent the size of the fish. When using the unit with the fish symbols off, set the gain up to approximately +2, and use the split-screen zoom. This will make it easier to see the fish. However, the unit still may not display perfect arches. There are units on the market that will show a perfect arch on the screen for anything which breaks the cone. Garmin Marine Devices do not and will only show the true echo. |
