NMEA 0183 Sentences Available on Compatible Garmin Handhelds

Some Garmin handhelds1 have the ability to output NMEA 0183 data for the purposes of interfacing with various pieces of marine equipment. Below is a list of sentences that are output2 by these devices. The Serial Data/Power Cable is required to connect a handheld to the marine equipment. 

  • GPRMC

  • GPRMB

  • GPGGA

  • GPGLL

  • GPBOD

  • GPBWC

  • GPVTG

  • GPXTE

  • PGRME

  • PGRMZ

  • PGRMM

  • HCHDG

The autopilot mode on the device interface enables only the following sentences:

  • GPRMC

  • GPRMB

  • GPAPB

  • GPXTE

Under the NMEA sentences you can toggle three groups on and off.

  1. Status:  GPGSA AND GPGSV

  2. Waypoints / Route: GPRTE AND GPWPL

  3. GRMN Proprietary: PGRME, PGRMM AND PGRMZ

The Heading, Deviation and Variation (HDG) sentence contains the compass heading. The Altitude (PGRMZ) sentence contains the barometric altitude.

NOTE: The GPSMAP 66 series, GPSMAP 79 series, and the GPSMAP 86 series can output the above listed sentences through a USB port to a computer; it does not connect directly to onboard marine equipment.
