Route Point Limitations for Outdoor Devices
Routes are predefined paths created from a group of points in a specific order.
For Garmin outdoor devices, routes can be created as direct point-to-point paths or, with compatible mapping, they can be set up to provide turn-by-turn directions using streets and/or trails. For either type of route that is being created it is important to keep in mind the following limitations on the number of points they can have.
Maximum Number of Points in a Route
Direct: 250 points
Turn-by-turn: 50 points
If the device fails to properly calculate or navigate a route after it has been created, it may be due to exceeding these limitations.
For more information about changing the routing settings, refer to your owner's manual.
Error: Only 50 Points Can Be Use for on Road Navigation
The generic message 'Only 50 points can be use for On Road navigation' appears whenever the turn-by-turn route point limit of 50 has been surpassed. To further clarify, the default route calculation method for outdoor devices is 'Hiking'. When selecting to navigate a route, this means the device will take the points in that route and attempt to find hiking trails that match between the points and make the line more curvy by following roads.
In this case only 50 points are allowed, so the "On road navigation" that the message refers to means any lines that are suitable for the activity type selected, which would be 'Hiking'. There are two ways to circumvent this error when needed:
If you do not wish for the device to attempt to calculate any additional details between the route points, you can change to the Direct Routing or Off Road guidance method and it will follow the path as-is with straight lines in-between each point. These modes allow up to 250 points to be used. For more information about changing the routing settings on your outdoor device, refer to your owner's manual.
While not always ideal depending on the number of points the route has, decreasing the number of points to 50 or less will allow turn-by-turn routing to be used. Decreasing the points can be done in the BaseCamp™ program before transferring a route to the device, or via the device itself.
