Relief Shading for Maps on Garmin Watches

Relief shading uses data from the Digital Elevation Map (DEM) to draw topographic shading, giving the map a three-dimensional look and feel. This can make contours and elevation changes more easily readable. Shaded relief detail levels will vary based on zoom level and type of watch. Due to the higher screen resolution of AMOLED displays, the relief shading will appear different compared to transflective memory-in-pixel  (MIP) displays. For visual examples, see Examples of Relief Shading below.

Enabling and Disabling Relief Shading

You can enable or disable the relief shading on your watch by following the steps below.

  1. Press START/STOP (upper-right button).

  2. Select Map.

  3. Press START/STOP.

  4. Select Map Layers.

  5. Select Shaded Relief or Relief Shading.

  6. Select Status to toggle the Relief Shading On or Off.

You can adjust these settings for individual activity profiles by going to the activity settings and selecting Map Layers. This allows you to adjust all the mapping settings, including shaded relief, for that individual activity profile. For full instructions for how to adjust activity settings, see your owner's manual.

Examples of Relief Shading

The examples below show the shaded relief on an Enduro™ 2 watch, which features a transflective memory-in-pixel display, and an epix™ Pro (Gen 2) - Sapphire Edition watch, which has an AMOLED display. Map details in your region can vary depending on the map detail that is available and the zoom level at which you are viewing the map.
