Viewing Topo Maps When Multiple Maps are Loaded to a Garmin Handheld
When multiple detailed maps are loaded to a handheld, they fall into a specific hierarchy. This can cause some detailed maps to be hidden when other detailed maps are also enabled. For example, if you have both City Navigator® maps and Topo 24k maps loaded to a handheld, the City Navigator map would need to be disabled in order to view the Topo 24K map because City Navigator map is at the top of the hierarchy.
If the map you are trying to use is not being displayed properly, ensure that both the 'Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR'1 and the specific Topo map you are trying to use are enabled and that other detailed maps you are not currently needing are disabled.
Enabling & Disabling Maps
NOTE: If you are using a GPSMAP® 276Cx outdoor handheld, select MENU while viewing the map page, then follow steps 3 and 4 in the instructions below. If you are using a GPSMAP® 67 or GPSMAP® 67i handheld, see - Enabling or Disabling Maps on a GPSMAP 67 Series Handheld.
Select Setup from the main menu.
Select Map.
Select one of the following options, depending on your specific model:
Map Information.
Map Manager.
Configure Maps.
Ensure that both the 'Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR'1 and the specific Topo map you are trying to use are enabled. Any other detailed maps that are not currently needed should be disabled. Steps for enabling/disabling maps will vary slightly depending on your specific model:
Enabled maps will say "Enabled" or they will have a check mark or raised toggle switch2
next to them.
Disabled maps will say "Disabled" or they will have an empty checkbox or lowered toggle switch2
next to them.
Select the map, checkbox, or toggle switch, then Enable or Disable (if prompted) to change which maps are enabled.
Once the Basemap and the desired detailed map have both been enabled, the map will display as expected. If you have multiple detailed maps, repeat these steps as needed to switch between maps.
1 The 'Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR' comes installed on many of Garmin's handheld devices which displays major roadways, state and country boundaries, and major geographic boundaries. The device switches between the additional topo mapping and the Basemap when zooming the map out so you can pan the map to view other locations without waiting for the device to draw all the topography lines in the area. A slowly drawing map or freezing of the device can be a result of the Basemap being disabled. If the Basemap appears to be missing, see - Required Map Files on Outdoor Devices.
2 Toggle switch examples are from a Montana® 700 and may look slightly different on other handheld models.
