Getting Started With Outdoor Maps Plus in the Garmin Explore App
With an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription, you gain access to a wide variety of premium mapping content. This content is regularly updated and the one subscription can be activated and downloaded directly in the Garmin Explore app and any of your compatible Garmin devices simultaneously via Wi-Fi. The topics below explain how to purchase, download, and use the different types of mapping content that are available with Outdoor Maps+.
NOTE: A Garmin Explore App Compatible device is required to subscribe to Outdoor Maps+, device map compatibility isn't required..

Purchasing Outdoor Maps+
Before you can purchase an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription through the Garmin Explore™ app, you must first pair a device that is compatible with the Garmin Explore App. For an inReach Professional account users, see - Purchasing an Outdoor Maps+ subscription on an inReach Professional Account.
To pair a compatible Garmin device:
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Allow any app permissions when prompted.
Sign in with your Garmin account if you are not already signed in.
If you do not have an account already, create a new account.
Place your Garmin device in pairing mode.
For steps, refer to your Owner's Manual.
Select Add Device if prompted, otherwise you can select
Devices, then either + Pair a New Device or
.
The app will then begin searching for devices.
Once your Garmin device is found, select Connect It and follow the prompts to complete the setup.
Once a compatible device has been paired in the Garmin Explore app, there are a couple of places where you can purchase an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription. When downloading new offline maps (either by selecting Offline Maps >
New Offline Map, or by selecting
Map >
> Create Offline Map), there will be an option to subscribe to Outdoor Maps+. You can also follow the steps below:
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select the profile icon in the top left.
Select Outdoor Maps+.
Select Get Started.
NOTE: If you see Browse all compatible devices, this means that a compatible device has not yet been paired in the app.
If prompted, select the Country/Region for your billing address, then select NEXT.
Tap SELECT THIS PLAN.
Select the box to agree to automatic renewal, review the terms and conditions, then select ACCEPT & CONTINUE.
Enter your billing address, then select SAVE.
Scroll down and enter your credit card information.
Check the box to authorize use of this payment method for future account charges, then select SAVE.
Once the purchase is processing you can select CLOSE.
Once the purchase has finished processing the subscription will be active and you can proceed with downloading Outdoor Maps+ content.
Downloading Outdoor Maps+ Content
NOTE: A data connection is required for downloading maps. Due to the size of the downloads, Garmin highly recommends using a high-speed Wi-Fi connection. Maps downloaded to the Garmin Explore app are not automatically downloaded to connected Garmin devices. After purchasing an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription, the following steps can be used to download map content. These steps can be repeated to download multiple areas of the map.
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select an option:

Offline Maps >
New Offline Map.
-OR-
Select
Map >
> Create Offline Map.
Drag the map to view different areas.
Pinch or spread two fingers on the screen to zoom in and out of the map.
Swipe up and select which layers to download.
NOTE: Tap
to the right of a layer for a description.
If the maps you wish to download are not listed, tap
and select more layers to add to the list of available map layers, then tap
to return to the previous screen.
Once you have selected the area and layers to download, select Save.
While the download is in progress, make sure to keep the app open or running in the background. Depending on the speed of your mobile device's internet connection, each download may take several minutes to complete.
Enabling or Disabling Specific Outdoor Maps+ Content
Use the steps below to choose which maps will be displayed in the Garmin Explore app.
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select
Map.
Select
in the top right of the map.
Tap on the different options below Map Type and Map Details to choose what should be displayed on the map.
Swipe up to view more Map Types and Map Details if needed.NOTE: If available, tap
for additional options (e.g. for Satellite Imagery you can toggle Hybrid map on or off).
Updating Maps
Outdoor Maps+ content is regularly updated. Use these steps any time you wish to check for updates.
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select
Offline Maps.
Select
.
Select Check for Updates.
While updates are in progress, make sure to keep the app open or running in the background. Depending on the speed of your mobile device's internet connection, each download may take several minutes to complete.
Deleting Maps
If you wish to delete Outdoor Maps+ content for any reason, follow the steps below.
Open the Garmin Explore app.
Select
Offline Maps.
Select
next to the map you wish to delete.
Select Delete.
- If prompted, select Delete again.
After completing these steps, the selected content will be removed from the Garmin Explore app.
Managing Your Subscription
When purchasing an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription, there is an option to enable automatic annual renewal. If you need to update your payment information or cancel automatic renewal this can be done by visiting garmin.com/subscriptions and signing into your Garmin account.
