Creating Custom POIs in BaseCamp

GPX (.gpx) files that contain waypoints can be created in BaseCamp™ software and then loaded as custom POIs (Points of Interest) on compatible Garmin devices using  Points of Interest (POI) Loader.

A GPX file can contain 1 waypoint or a list containing many waypoints. Adding waypoints to a list will help organize the POIs when they are exported. See the BaseCamp Help menu for information on creating waypoints and managing data and lists.

The longitude, latitude, and name are all included in the waypoint when it is created.  Comments and proximity alerts can be added in the properties window of each waypoint.

To Add a Comment to a Waypoint:

  1. Double-click the waypoint
  2. Click the Notes tab (Windows only)
  3. Enter the comments in the Comments field (Mac) or the Notes box (Windows)

To Add a Proximity Alert to a Waypoint:

  1. Double-click the waypoint
  2. Click Advanced (Mac only)
  3. Enter the distance (in miles) into the Proximity field
    • BaseCamp will accept values between 0 and 24901 miles (40074 kilometers)

NOTE: When entering proximity alert values, ensure that the units are set correctly both in BaseCamp and on the device. To check or change the units of measurement on your device, refer to the owners' manual.

Once all of the desired waypoints have been added, export the file in the GPX file format.

To Export Data:

  1. Select the waypoint or list
  2. Click File
  3. Click Export
  4. Click Export “([Content Name])”
  5. Enter a file name
  6. Choose a file location
  7. Click Save

Once the GPX file has been saved, the custom points of interest can be loaded to the device using POI Loader.
