No AIS Targets on Garmin Device

When using an AIS device, if you are not seeing any targets, there are multiple things to check. 

  1. Check the AIS Status Light; for more information on the AIS Status Lights and what they mean, click here.

  2. If the AIS is connected over NMEA 2000, check to see if it is appearing in the chartplotters device list. If the AIS does not appear, troubleshoot the NMEA 2000 network. For troubleshooting steps, click here.

    • On the chartplotter, select Settings > Communications > NMEA 2000 Setup > Device List  

  3. If the AIS is connected over NMEA 0183, ensure the Communication port setting on the chartplotter is set to NMEA High Speed

    • With the chartplotter powered ON, press the Home button

    • Choose Configure or Settings

    • Select Communications

    • Choose NMEA 0183 Setup

    • Choose Port Types

    • Choose the NMEA Input port that the receiver is connected to 

    • Select NMEA High Speed

  4. Ensure AIS is enabled on the chartplotter

    • Select Settings > Other Vessels > AIS > On
