TüN® 4: Autoset EQ to Target

A powerful tool found in TüN® Software when connected to JL Audio DSP products is Autoset EQ to Target. This micro-automation improves speed and efficiency. It will automatically equalize the channel selected using the measured response to match a selected target curve. This utilizes powerful calculations with individual adjustments to the gain (boost or cut), Q (width or range affected), and center frequency for each band of parametric equalizer (PEQ). This can be used with the JL Audio VXi and MVi DSP amplifiers along with the JL Audio TwK® system tuning DSP. It can also be used in simulation mode and will populate the EQ values, that could then be manually transferred to any DSP, including other brands. The Q values that are populated do use the math for JL Audio products, so the Q value may vary depending on the DSP being used.

To use the Autoset EQ to Target feature, a target file needs to be displayed within the graph window on either the RTA or Magnitude measurement window. To load a target, select "Targets" which is on the right side of the interface, just under the Master Mute control. There will be a Load button visible in the bottom of the Targets Panel in the bottom right corner of TüN® Software. Once a target is selected and displayed within the graph window, switch back to "Outputs" which is just under the "Targets" button. Next, choose a channel to begin with and confirm there is a crossover engaged that is safe for that speaker. If a USB microphone or sound card is being used, the user may need to offset the position of the data on the graph window. Instructions to do that can be found: TüN® 4: How to Use a USB Microphone or External Sound Card.

In the top center of the RTA or Magnitude measurement window, the Autoset EQ button will be visible whenever Outputs Mode is selected. If Targets Mode is selected, the Autoset EQ button will disappear. Three things are needed for the Autoset EQ button to operate. The input signal (microphone) needs to be visible under SELECTED DATA:, the desired channel needs to be selected under OUTPUT:, and the desired target needs to be selected under TARGET:

Confirm Pink Noise is playing from the speaker and that the position of the data is just at or above the target. Positioning the data relative to the target is very important and determines the difference between precision and output. Placing the data too high above the target, may get it to match very well, but sacrifice overall output. Placing the data too low will result in more output, but likely a worse result from the Autoset EQ to Target function. Once the data is positioned properly, click the
Autoset EQ button. The equalization will be applied and the live measurement should begin to overlay the target. If the user is unhappy with the result, the Autoset EQ to Target can be re-ran or reset with a change in data position or Banding applied. Manual equalization can be done at any time and the user is never locked out from these controls.
