Odometer and Trip Odometer Overlay Numbers for Garmin® Marine Devices
Garmin marine devices such as handhelds and fixed mount chartplotters are able to display odometer and trip odometer readings as an Overlay Number, while some devices may also have this feature available to display on a Trip page or on the Engine gauge page.
For more information on setting up Overlay Numbers or configuring a Trip page or Engine gauge page to display or reset the odometer and or trip odometer, refer to the Garmin marine device Owner's Manual.
For fixed mount Garmin chartplotters, integrating a new Garmin chartplotter to the network of one or more existing Garmin chartplotters, whether by Garmin Marine Network or NMEA 2000®, the existing odometer or trip odometer reading will not be synced. To ensure the odometer and trip odometer information remain the same between multiple chartplotters see Using one GPS Antenna Over Multiple Chartplotters Using the Marine Network or NMEA 2000.
If the odometer and trip odometer are already out of sync, there is no way to manually enter an odometer or trip odometer value. A reset is necessary if the values must be the same. Each Garmin marine device is independently recording and displaying the odometer and trip odometer based on which ever GPS antenna source is and or has been set as default. For reset instructions, refer to the Garmin marine device Owner's Manual.
Additional Information about the Odometer
Odometers on marine vessels are not federally regulated. Unless reset, an odometer on a Garmin marine device indefinitely and permanently records distance from the moment the Garmin marine device is first powered, and continues to record while the Garmin marine device is in a powered on state; disconnecting power does not reset the odometer. The odometer reading is based upon the moment the GPS position information registers measurable change between one GPS location and the next from one single point of reference to the next (over ground) up and until the latest reading being read in the present time.
Additional Information about the Trip Odometer
Trip odometers, prior to being reset, obtain values from the same source providing the reading to the odometer. The intended purpose allows for recorded and displayed distance data to be trip specific with the ability to reset back to 0 without affecting the odometer reading. Trip odometers are great for logging trips by distance. If the trip odometer has never been reset it will match the odometer.
The Limit to Digits for the Odometer and Trip Odometer
How many digits can be displayed on various Garmin marine devices varies. Not all devices are listed, for more information on this feature, refer to the Owner's Manual.
Garmin Chartplotters & the TD 50: Trip and total odometer are limited to 4 digits so the highest reading available is 9999
GNX™ Displays: Trip and total odometer are limited to 4 digits so the highest reading available is 9999
GMI™ 20: Trip and total odometer are limited to 4 digits so the highest reading available is 9999, with exception to the powerboat profile page which displays 5 digits
