No Audio from Garmin Automotive Device when Using an iPhone Connected to a USB Cable or Docking Station

Important:  The Garmin Speak™ app can no longer be installed and has been replaced by the Garmin Drive™ App. To download the Garmin Drive app, visit Google Play for Android or App Store for Apple.

While using your Garmin device with an iPhone, if the iPhone is connected to a USB cable or dock for charging purposes, you may find that you are no longer receiving audio through the Garmin device's internal speakers. Audio may be sent through your vehicle's stereo system if the iPhone is connected to a USB port on an in-dash system, or audio may not play at all. On the Garmin DriveSmart™ 65 with Amazon Alexa GPS navigator, you may receive the message Audio is currently playing to the vehicle stereo using your phone's USB connection.

iPhone audio source

This can occur because the iPhone is attempting to send phone audio through the connected USB cable or dock instead of through the Garmin device.

To resolve this issue, open the iPhone's output menu by touching the  output icon, then select the name of the Garmin device (the Garmin Speak™ is pictured below as an example). For information on locating this icon, see this Apple support article.

As long as the Garmin device is set up and paired properly, it should appear in this list. Select it, and audio should now play through the device. For setup and pairing instructions, refer to the device's owners' manual.
