Backup User Data Instructions for Geko

It is recommended to occasionally back up the user data on your Geko 201 or Geko 301 GPS. User data includes waypoints, routes, tracks, and geocaches. A few instances in which you will want to back up your user data would be:

  • Before updating the device software
  • Before performing a master reset
  • To provide a good database in case the loss of user data occurs
  • To quickly edit user data and send it back to the device

To back up user data, ensure a Garmin mapping product like Trip & Waypoint Manager1 is installed on the computer so MapSource®2 software can be utilized.

Backing up User Data With MapSource Software

NOTE: The Geko 101 has no computer interface, therefore the user data can not be backed up.

  1. Install Trip & Waypoint Manager (or another Garmin mapping product).
  2. Download and install the latest update of MapSource software.2
  3. Connect the Geko to the computer.
  4. Open MapSource.
  5. Select Transfer menu.
  6. Select Receive From Device.
  7. If the Geko does not automatically appear, select Find Device.
  8. Ensure all appropriate fields are check-marked in the What to Receive box.
  9. Click Receive.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Select the File menu.
  12. Select Save As...
  13. Choose a name, format, and location to save the exported data.
  14. Select Save.

All user data will now have a backup and be visible within the MapSource program.

1 Production of all MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager Products as well as all WorldMap products ended May 5, 2014.

2 If you encounter a "Previous MapSource Not Found" error while installing MapSource software this can be resolved by installing the BaseCamp™ program first, then running the MapSource program install again. While serial devices are not directly compatible with BaseCamp software, installing the program will load the necessary background files required for MapSource software to install and run on the computer.
