Downloading and Managing Maps With the Earthmate App

Highly detailed topographic maps (US and Canada), color aerial imagery (US only), and detailed TopoActive maps of the rest of the world can be downloaded for viewing and use in the Earthmate® app. This article walks you through download, managing, and deleting maps. IMPORTANT: an inReach® device must be associated to your explore.garmin.com account to download and view maps in the Earthmate app.

iOS Instructions


Downloading Maps

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Touch Map.

  3. Touch Map Layer Icon.

  4. Touch Download.

    NOTE: On iOS, maps can only be downloaded to the phone's internal storage.

  5. Touch Two Down Arrows next to the maps you would like to download for the area surrounding your current location, or, use Select Region or Select Waypoint to download maps in other areas.


    Select Region

    1. Touch Select Region.

    2. Pan and zoom the map to select the desired region.

    3. Touch Single Down Arrow Select Region Earthmate iOS to collapse the Select Region window.

    4. Touch Two Down Arrows next to the maps you would like to download.


    Select Waypoint

    1. Touch Select Waypoint.

    2. Select a waypoint from the list.

    3. Touch Two Down Arrows next to the maps you would like to download.

      NOTE: To adjust or refine the download region surrounding the waypoint, use Select Region before selecting the maps to download.


  6. Wait for the download to complete.


Managing Maps

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Touch Map.

  3. Touch Map Layer Icon.

  4. Touch Manage.

  5. Touch individual maps to toggle their visibility.

    NOTE: Visible maps will display a check mark.

Viewing Downloaded Maps

When viewing the Map page it will be centered over your current location by default, as indicated by the GPS location arrow Blue Triangle. If the enabled map you wish to view is not at your current location, touch and drag on the map to pan it over to the area you wish to view. You can also pinch or spread two fingers on the screen to zoom in and out of the map as needed. If you need to recenter the map over your current location, touch Green Centering Arrow.


Deleting Maps

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Touch Map.

  3. Touch Map Layer Icon.

  4. Touch Manage.

  5. Swipe to the left on a map to view the option to delete.

Android Instructions

NOTE: By default, the Earthmate app saves maps to the internal memory of the Android phone. If you want maps saved to a microSD card instead of the internal memory of the Android phone, use the steps for Configuring App Storage before downloading maps.


Configuring App Storage (Optional)

If a memory card1 is installed in the Android phone, you can set the Earthmate app to save the downloaded maps to the memory card instead of internal storage using steps below.

  1. Touch Three Dot Symbol Earthmate App Android.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Map.

  4. Select Map Directory.

    A Map Directory window appears with options for Internal and SD Card.

  5. Choose SD Card.


1 Some Android devices will allow SD cards to be formatted as extended storage for the mobile device. If you format an SD card as extended storage, you will not be given the option to download maps to the SD card. Your mobile device may automatically download the maps to an SD card formatted as external storage, but will not be read by the Earthmate app.


Downloading Maps

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Touch Three Lines Menu Symbol.

  3. Select Map.

  4. Touch Map Layer Icon.

  5. Touch Get Maps.

  6. Choose maps from the list presented, or use Select Region or Select Waypoint to download maps for another area.

    • Choosing Select Region will bring up the map, and you can scroll to the area you would like to download then select done.

    • Choosing Select Waypoint will bring up a list of waypoints you have saved in the Earthmate app. Selecting a waypoint will bring up maps available for the area the waypoint is located in. This option will appear if you have waypoints in the Earthmate app.

  7. Touch Two Down Arrows or Cloud Arrow to start downloading maps.

    • Two Down Arrows Downloads all the maps in the region selected.

    • Cloud Arrow Downloads the individual state in the region selected.

Managing Maps

NOTE: When managing maps, an Updates Available option may display if there are any new map updates available.

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Touch Three Lines Menu Symbol.

  3. Select Map.

  4. Touch Map Layer Icon.

  5. Deselect maps you would not like displayed.

    NOTE: You can select a Map Type, or select subsets of maps by touching on the map type names to drill down to individual states and regions to selectively hide certain imagery from view.


Viewing Downloaded Maps

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Touch Three Lines Menu Symbol.

  3. Select Map.

  4. Touch Map Layer Icon.

  5. Select a map type.
