Importing a Third-Party Course into Garmin Connect

To bring a course from another website into the Garmin Connect™ platform, you can import third-party course files in .fit, .gpx, or .tcx formats. For detailed instructions, select one of the options below.

NOTE: TCX files will generally be larger files than GPX files as they can contain additional information such as speed or cue-sheet data.

Importing Courses

Garmin Connect App

When importing a third-party course with waypoints into Garmin Connect, waypoints may not be preserved and may not appear on the device when following the course. It is recommended to create Course Points in Garmin Connect. For more information on Course Points, and viewing them on a device, see related content at the bottom of this FAQ.

  1. Select the course file on your phone to open it.

  2. Follow the prompts to open the file with the Garmin Connect app:

    • Android: Select to open with Connect.

Open with Garmin Connect app (Android)

    • iOS: Select box with an arrow pointing up, then select either the Garmin Connect app logo from the available apps or Copy to Connect (if available).

Open with Garmin Connect app (iOS)

  3. Select a course type.

  4. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and select Course Name to edit the name.

NOTE: When naming courses, keep in mind that most devices have a limit where they only look at the first 15 characters in the name of a course. If there are multiple courses where the first 15 characters are the same, the device will think they are the same course. To work around this limitation, make sure the names vary within the first 15 characters.

  5. Select Done (Android) or the back arrow in the top left (iOS) to save the name change.

After importing the file, use the Garmin Express™ software or the Garmin Connect app to send the saved course to a compatible device. For additional information, see Related content below.
