Navigating with the inReach SE+/Explorer+

The inReach SE®+ or inReach Explorer®+ handheld is able to provide direct navigation to waypoints, tracking points and multi-point routes. Direct navigation does not follow roads or trails, but rather provides straight as-the-crow-flies lines from point to point.

During navigation, the inReach SE+/Explorer+ handheld does not give spoken directions or tone alerts, but instead always shows the current route on the map page or the direction of the next route point on the compass page.

Refer to the sections below for using the navigation feature.

Starting Navigation

First, you need to select a destination to navigate to or a route to navigate along.

Navigating to a Waypoint

  1. Select Waypoints from the main menu.

  2. Select a waypoint.

  3. Select Navigate.


Navigating to a Tracking Point

This method is helpful if you want to navigate back to the starting point of your activity, which requires you to start tracking before heading out. You can also select a tracking point from a previously recorded track. Steps for both are below.

Navigating to the Starting Tracking Point of the Current Track

  1. Select Tracking.

  2. Select Start to begin the track recording.

  3. When ready to navigate back to the starting point, select History.

    • To find this option, scroll to the right of the main menu.

  4. Select Today for the current track.

  5. Select the starting tracking point in the list.

    • This should be the last point towards the bottom of the list, or the earliest if going by the time stamp.

  6. Select Navigate at the bottom.

Navigating to a Tracking Point of a Previously Recorded Track

  1. Select History.

    • To find this option, scroll to the right of the main menu.

  2. Select a track.

  3. Select the tracking point from the list.

  4. Select Navigate at the bottom.


Navigating a Saved Route

  1. Select Routes.

  2. Select a route.

  3. Select Navigate.

Assistance During Navigation

Once a destination or route has been selected, you can use the Map and/or Compass to assist in navigating.

Using the Map During Navigation

  1. Select Map.

    • Location Arrowrepresents your location on the map. Your route is marked with a colored line.

  2. Complete one or more of the following actions:

    • To view different areas, pan the map around usingNavigation Button.

    • To zoom in or out on the map, use + or -.


Using the Compass During Navigation

  1. Select Compass.

  2. Turn the device until the heading pointer aligns with the bearing pointer, and begin moving in that direction to the destination.


Stopping Navigation

When ready to stop your navigation, use the steps below.

  1. Select Compass.

  2. Press Menu Button.

  3. Select Stop Navigating.
