Getting Started with the Garmin Approach R50

If you are setting up an Approach® R50 launch monitor for the first time, the video and steps below will walk you through the process to set up and get the most out of your new device.

Below is a list of articles that will help you get started with, and get the most out of, your new Garmin Approach R50.

How Do I Get Started?

Before getting started, we recommend that you fully charge your Approach R50. See your owner's manual to learn how. After charging the the Approach R50, you can begin setting up the device.

How to Set Up the Approach R50 for the First Time

  1. Power on the Approach R50 by pressing the power button on the front of the device.

  2. Select the language you prefer and press Getting Started.

  3. Select the Wi-Fi® network you would like to use from the list of nearby networks shown on the screen.

  4. Enter your network password and press Connect.

  5. Verify your Region and Time Zone are accurate and press Next.

  6. Chose an option to sign into an existing Garmin account, create a new Garmin account, or create a guest profile.

  7. After signing into your account, select which hand you swing your club with and press Next.

  8. Verify your systems of measurement and press Done.

  9. Select an option on this screen if you want to register the device to your Garmin Connect account.

  10. Chose the account or profile you would like to use by pressing the user avatar on the screen.

You are now ready to use your Approach R50 launch monitor.


How to Prepare for a Shot

NOTE: A Garmin Golf membership is required to play virtual rounds. For more details, see What Golf Simulator Features Are Available With My Approach Launch Monitor? and How to Purchase a Garmin Golf Membership Subscription.

  1. Place the ball at the desired tee location.

    NOTE: The tee location must be at least 8 ft. (2.4 m) away from the net when playing indoors.

  2. Place the device 1-2 feet in front of the ball so that the ball is directly between you and the Approach R50.

  3. Press the button to turn on the device.

  4. Select a golf simulator game mode.

  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to make sure the ball is in detection range of the Approach R50. This is also known as the hitting zone.

  6. When the LED light at the bottom of the Approach R50 is green you are ready to take your shot.
