Check Valve Kit for Garmin 1.2L and 2.0L Pumps
1.2L and 2.0L Pumps
The 1.2L and 2.0L autopilot pumps do not contain check valves. The user may encounter situations under the manual control of the vessel. Continual helm inputs are needed to keep the boat on its intended course. A check valve kit may be needed as it is intended to lock off a steering cylinder so that the engine(s) do not move when the autopilot is not in use. The check valve kit should be used in situations where regular maintenance and proper troubleshooting have been performed, and the issue is still not resolved. See figure 1
Helm Check Valves
Helms also have check valves which can, over time, become inoperable due to contaminant build-up in the hydraulic system. Build-up can prevent the bearing in the check valve from correctly seating, allowing fluid to bypass. A faulty helm check valve symptom includes a spinning steering wheel when the autopilot is engaged. Fix, replace the helm, or install a check valve kit. See figure 2

The Garmin Check Valve Kit will not include fittings, T-fittings, and plugs to facilitate installation. The installer will need to source these parts, which are specific for each vessel. The necessary parts to convert a 5-hose installation typically seen with Ranger Tug or Cutwater installed autopilots to a 3-hose installation with a check valve are listed below. Ensure the parts given are suitable for the mid-2017 and older or mid-2017 and newer 1.2L and 2.0L pumps.
