How Does the Ground Contact Time Balance Feature Work on Garmin Fitness Watches?

Ground contact time balance (GCT balance) measures your symmetry as you run by monitoring the balance between your left and right foot ground contact time. It is always displayed as a percentage greater than 50% with an arrow to the left or right, to show which foot is on the ground longer.

For most people, a more symmetrical running form is preferable. Color gauges on Garmin watches and your Garmin Connect™ account show how balanced you are compared to other runners. Many runners report that GCT balance tends to deviate farther from 50/50 when they run up or down hills, when they do speed work, or when they are fatigued. Some runners also notice that injuries are reflected in greater imbalance.

GCT balance is one of six running dynamics metrics available when using an HRM-Fit™, HRM-Pro™, HRM-Run™, or HRM-Tri™ heart rate monitor, or a Running Dynamics Pod with a compatible Garmin watch. For more information on all six running dynamics metrics and a list of compatible watches, see: Garmin Watches That Support Running Dynamics.
