Garmin Velocity Made Good (VMG): Waypoint VMG and Wind VMG

Garmin chartplotters can compute and display Waypoint VMG and Wind VMG.

  • VMG: Velocity Made Good (VMG)

  • Waypoint VMG: A measurement of how fast a vessel travels either toward or away from an active waypoint. Waypoint VMG is a function of the GPS. If the Waypoint VMG value displays as a negative number, the vessel is moving away from the active waypoint

  • Wind VMG: A measurement of how quickly a ship moves toward or away from the wind direction. If the Wind VMG value displays a negative number, the vessel is moving away from the wind

The following chartplotters running the latest software version can display Waypoint VMG using the navigation functions Go To, Route To, and Auto Guidance+™ technology.

 Waypoint VMG:

Devices Required to compute Waypoint VMG:

Compatible chartplotter

  • GPS Speed (SOG)

Wind VMG

Devices Required to compute Wind VMG:

  1. Wind transducer connected (wired or wireless) to the NMEA 2000 Network

  2. A Speed Source: A GPS for Speed Over Ground (SOG) or a Paddle Wheel for Boat Speed (BSP) connected to the NMEA 2000 Network

  3. A compatible Garmin chartplotter

A GNX™ wind instrument or GMI™ 20 marine instrument will only display VMG when navigating a route, a chartplotter is needed to show the overlay.
