Differences Between Powering Down Device and Sleep Mode

There are two ways to turn off the screen on your automotive device: put it into sleep mode or turn the device off completely.

Sleep Mode

Sleep mode allows you to quickly reacquire satellites and resume the use of the device. This mode is activated by pressing the power button in once or sliding the power switch on your device to the off position.

Sleep mode can also be activated by disconnecting the device from the vehicle power cable and allowing it to "timeout", which pauses navigation and turns off the display.

The device may countdown or display it is checking for updates (if Wi-Fi capable) and then will turn off. The device won't actually be turning all the way off, however. It will only be going into sleep mode. See the example below. For information on display timeout, see your device's owner's manual.

In Sleep Mode:

  • The battery will draw slightly more power than being fully turned off, but less than if the device was turned on.

  • When the power button is pressed again, the device will immediately turn on and resume navigation.

When the battery drains low in sleep mode, the device will power off. This mode helps to conserve battery. However, for extended periods of non-use, consider turning the device fully off to save battery.

Turning the Device Off

To turn off the device, press and hold the power button or power switch for several seconds and then press Off if prompted. It will require several seconds to reboot a device after it has been fully turned off. This will shut down the device and best preserve its battery charge.

During troubleshooting, some steps may advise rebooting the device. This means the device needs to be turned off using this method, then turned back on.

See the owner's manual for your model if you're not sure where to find the power button or power switch on your device.
