Downloading and Managing Maps with the Earthmate App for Android

Highly detailed topographic maps of North America, color aerial imagery (US only), Open Street Map (OSM), NOAA (US Only) nautical charts, and detailed maps of the rest of the world can be downloaded for use in the Earthmate app for Android.

IMPORTANT: An inReach device associated with your Garmin Explore account is required to download and view maps in the Earthmate app.


Adding and Removing Maps in the Earthmate App on Android

By default, the Earthmate app saves maps to the internal memory of the Android phone.

NOTE: Before downloading maps, if you want maps saved to a microSD card instead of the internal memory of the Android phone, use steps for Configuring App Storage in the next section.

Downloading Maps
  1. Open the Earthmate App
  2. Touch Earthmate Android Menu Icon
  3. Select Map
    Earthmate App Map

  4. Touch Earthmate App Layer Icon
  5. Touch Get Maps
    Download Maps Earthmate App

  6. Choose maps from the list presented, or use Select Region or Select Waypoint to download maps for another area
    • Choosing Select Region will bring up the map, and you can scroll to the area you would like to download
    • Choosing Select Waypoint will bring up a list of waypoints you have saved in the Earthmate app. Selecting a waypoint will bring up maps available for the area the waypoint is located in. This option will appear if you have waypoints in the Earthmate App.

Managing Maps
  1. Open the Earthmate App
  2. Touch Earthmate App Menu Icon
  3. Select Map
    Select Map Earthmate App

  4. Touch Map Layer Button Earthmate
  5. Deselect maps you would not like displayed

    NOTE: You can select a Map Type, or select subsets of maps by touching on the map type names to drill down to individual states and regions to selectively hide certain imagery from view

NOTE: An Updates Available option will display if there are any new map updates available. 

Deleting Maps
  1. Open the Earthmate app
  2. Touch Menu Icon Earthmate App Android
  3. Select Map
    Select Map Earthmate Android

  4. Touch Layer Icon Earthmate App
  5. Select a map type
    Map Type Options

  6. Touch and hold on a map, then choose Delete

(Optional) Setting Up SD Card Maps Storage for Earthmate on Android

If a memory card1 is installed in the Android phone, you can set the Earthmate app to save the downloaded maps to the memory card instead of internal storage using steps below.

Configuring App Storage
  1. Select Three Dot Symbol Earthmate App Android
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Map
  4. Select Map Directory
    A Map Directory window appears with options for Internal and SD Card
  5. Choose SD Card




1 Some Android devices will allow SD cards to be formatted as extended storage for the mobile device. If you format an SD card as extended storage, you will not be given the option to download maps to the SD card. Your mobile device may automatically download the maps to an SD card formatted as external storage, but will not be read by the Earthmate app.
