How Does the Index Smart Scale Series Calculate Bone Mass?

Index Smart Scales have the ability to measure several different metrics including Bone Mass. Bone Mass readings can potentially be difficult to understand unless you are aware of what the scale is measuring. Typically, most methods include the weight of bone and water contained in the bone. The scale does not measure water contained in the skeletal structure because the percentage of water is provided as a separate metric. This results in a value returned by the scale known as dry bone mass. Dry bone mass is derived from age and lean body mass which is total body mass minus fat. On average a user's dry bone mass will be around 7% of their total weight. The value will typically be higher for younger adults and lower for older. Other variables including overall health and activity level of the user will factor in to the dry bone mass value as well.
