Setting up LiveTrack for inReach Devices in the Garmin Messenger app

A core feature of inReach® satellite communicators is the option of allowing others to follow your trip progress. The following article explains how to do this via a LiveTrack™ page, which is the default method for new inReach subscribers to share their trip progress. Alternatively, if you have enabled a MapShare™ page for your inReach device, or would like to learn more about MapShare, see - Setting up MapShare in the Garmin Messenger App.

Use the instructions in this article to enable and configure LiveTrack when using the Garmin Messenger™ app with a compatible inReach device.


Enabling LiveTrack

Follow the instructions below to enable LiveTrack from the Garmin Messenger app (when mobile data or Wi-Fi is available). You can also access this setting by logging in to your account at the Garmin Explore™ website, then select the MapShare tab.

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select MapShare.

    • NOTE: If LiveTrack is listed in the Settings rather than MapShare, this means LiveTrack is already enabled.

  4. Select Switch to LiveTrack.

  5. Select Switch when prompted.

  6. Select Set Up LiveTrack when prompted.

  7. Select Agree for the LiveTrack Location Data Agreement.

After agreeing to the LiveTrack Location Data Agreement, you will be presented with options to notify recipients, set up a LiveTrack profile, or switch back to MapShare:

You can get back to these settings at any time by selecting the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left of the Garmin Messenger app, then select LiveTrack from the list of settings. Additional LiveTrack settings will be available once you have entered recipients and set up your LiveTrack profile.


Set Up or Edit Your LiveTrack Profile URL

Your LiveTrack profile is a page where viewers can see your LiveTrack sessions. After enabling LiveTrack, you can set up or edit your LiveTrack profile URL (when mobile data or Wi-Fi is available).
  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select Set Up LiveTrack Profile (or Edit LiveTrack Profile URL if you had set up a profile previously).

  5. Tap on the field for your URL to customize it.

    Your custom URL must be between 3 and 64 characters in length and contain only letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), underscores (_), or dashes (-).

  6. Enter a custom URL, then select Save.

Set Up LiveTrack Recipients

After enabling LiveTrack, you can set up a list of recipients to have them automatically notified whenever you start tracking. Recipients must be set up on your account while your phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data available.

Adding Recipients

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Toggle on Notify Recipients if it is not already enabled, then select Recipients.

  5. Select Plus Symbol Add Recipient.

  6. Select Connect, Messenger, or Phone from the top of the screen.

  7. Select a contact.

    You can also select Connect > Plus Symbol Add Contact to enter a new recipient's name and phone number and/or email.

  8. Select a contact method (e.g. mobile phone or email).

  9. If prompted, select Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact.

  10. If a mobile phone number was selected, you will also be prompted to verify the phone number is correct.

    After verifying the number is correct, select Send Request.

  11. If a mobile phone number was selected, you will then be redirected to your phone's default text messaging app to finishing sending the request as a text message.

After sending a contact request to a mobile phone number, the recipient will need to accept the request in the text message they receive. Once accepted, they will automatically begin receiving text message notifications whenever tracking has been started.

After adding an email contact, there is no need for the recipient to accept the request. They will automatically begin receiving email notifications whenever tracking has been started. If they no longer wish to receive these emails, the recipient can select the Unsubscribe link in the email.

Removing Recipients

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select Recipients.

  5. Select the recipient you wish to remove.

  6. Select Remove LiveTrack Recipient when prompted.

  7. Select Remove when prompted.


Saved Session Privacy Settings

After setting up your LiveTrack profile URL, you will have the option to adjust the privacy settings for new or past LiveTrack sessions.

Privacy Settings for New Sessions

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select Saved Session Privacy.

  5. Select Only Me or Everyone.

After selecting Only Me, viewers of your LiveTrack profile URL will not see any new LiveTrack sessions and they will only be visible to you. Your LiveTrack recipients will still receive a link of your active LiveTrack location through email and/or text to view the session while it is in progress.

After selecting Everyone, viewers of your LiveTrack profile URL will see all new LiveTrack sessions on your profile.

Privacy Settings for Past Sessions

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select Saved Session Privacy.

  5. Select Update Past Sessions.

  6. Select Only Me or Everyone.

  7. Select UPDATE.

  8. Select Continue when prompted to change the privacy of all past sessions.

After selecting Only Me, all past LiveTrack sessions will be visible only to you.

After selecting Everyone, viewers of your LiveTrack profile URL will see all past LiveTrack sessions on your profile.

Privacy Settings for Individual Sessions

You can change the privacy of any individual session by editing the session from your LiveTrack profile. Select the lock icon next to an activity, then select Locked Only Me or Unlocked Everyone:

Active Session Privacy Settings

After setting up your LiveTrack profile URL, you will have the option to adjust the privacy settings for active LiveTrack sessions.
  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select Active Session Privacy.

  5. Select Only Me or Everyone.

If set to Only Me, viewers of your LiveTrack profile URL will not see your current LiveTrack location. Your LiveTrack recipients will still receive a link of your active LiveTrack location through email and/or text to view the session while it is in progress.

View LiveTrack Consent

After enabling LiveTrack, you can go back and view the LiveTrack consent agreement and opt out if you decide to. Opting out will disable LiveTrack.
  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select View LiveTrack Consent.

  5. Select Opt Out or Cancel.

Delete LiveTrack Profile

You can delete your LiveTrack data if you decide to stop using LiveTrack. Deleting your LiveTrack profile will delete your profile, your customized URL, and all historical LiveTrack sessions.
  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select LiveTrack.

  4. Select Delete LiveTrack Profile and follow the prompts.


Changing Map Unit Settings for LiveTrack

While viewing someone's LiveTrack session, the viewer can select 3 Lines Menu Symbol in the top right of the page, then select the drop down menu for the map units:
