Syncing a Montana 700i or 750i for Professional Users

It is important to sync an inReach® device after any account changes are made on the Garmin Explore™ website as described in section 2.2 of the Service Terms for inReach Professional Service Plans.

Syncing data, contacts, preset messages, and quick text messages, and account changes for devices on Professional accounts can be performed by the administrator or sub-users who have been provided a log in email address and password for the Garmin Explore website.

IMPORTANT FOR ADMINISTRATORS: Passwords must be set for sub-users before they can sync assigned devices with the Garmin Explore app. For steps to set user passwords, see - Changing Passwords in a Professional inReach Account.

A Montana® 700i or 750i outdoor handheld active on a Professional account can be synced via Bluetooth using the Garmin Explore app on a smartphone using the steps below. These devices can also be synced via microSD card using the File Based Configuration tool or via the Satellite Network using the processes explained in Configuring Garmin Handhelds for a Professional Administrator

Pairing With the Garmin Explore App as Administrator or Sub-User

Before getting started, the Garmin Explore app should be installed from the app store on the smartphone being used to sync. The smartphone should have an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to sync account information through the Garmin Explore app. Ensure the handheld is up to date on software.   1. Open the Garmin Explore app.

    • If prompted, read and agree to EULA, and sign in:

    • Administrator-Assigned Device: Sign in using the administrator email address and password for the inReach Professional account.

    • User-Assigned Device: Sign in using the email address and password provided by the account administrator.

  2. Select Watch and Handheld Devices.

  3. Select Plus Symbol Pair a New Device.

  4. On the Montana handheld, enable pairing mode by selecting Home Setup > Bluetooth > Continue.

  5. In the Garmin Explore app, select Connect It.

  6. Enter the 6 digit code from the Montana handheld when prompted.

Once paired, syncing occurs automatically when the Garmin Explore app is opened or manually by following the steps below.


Syncing With the Garmin Explore Website and Garmin Explore App

When the Garmin Explore app is opened or refreshed, it automatically syncs between the Garmin Explore website and the paired handheld device when it is powered on. It can take a few moments for both to complete.

However, syncs can also be performed manually with the steps below. Syncing manually can be useful for sharing newly created data or changes between the Garmin Explore app, Garmin Explore website, and handheld device.

Syncing Manually With the Garmin Explore Website

  1. Open the Garmin Explore app.

  2. Select the profile icon in the top left.

  3. Select Explore Sync Icon below the user's name and email address.

    • The sync icon has to be orange to manually perform a sync. If the icon is gray, this usually indicates a recent or upcoming sync.

  4. Wait for the sync to complete.

When the sync is finished, the icon will change to gray and display the time of the last sync.

Syncing Manually With the Paired Montana Handheld

  1. Open the Garmin Explore app.

  2. Select Watch and Handheld Devices.

  3. Select the Montana handheld.

  4. Select Explore Sync Icon

    • The sync icon has to be orange to manually perform a sync. If the icon is gray, this usually indicates a recent or upcoming sync.

  5. Wait for the sync to complete.

The Garmin Explore app will update the time of the last sync after the sync has completed.


Administrator Steps to Sync Multiple User-Assigned Devices in the Garmin Explore App

Multiple user-assigned devices can be synced through the Garmin Explore app by the administrator by signing out of the Garmin Explore app, signing in with the email address and password assigned to the sub-user, then pairing and syncing the next device.

Signing Out of the Garmin Explore App

  1. Open the Garmin Explore app.

  2. Select the profile icon in the top left.

  3. Select Sign Out.

After signing out of the app, follow the steps in the previous section to pair the next device to be synced with the Garmin Explore apps using the log in credentials assigned to the device.
