Tracking With the Garmin Messenger App

NOTICE: Effective July 1, 2024, the ability to post to Facebook® pages and X (formerly known as Twitter®) from inReach devices is no longer available. Users can still send tracking updates to a LiveTrack™ page from an inReach device, and can send messages as well as tracking updates to a MapShare™ page. You can share your MapShare or LiveTrack link on social media using a computer or mobile device with internet access.

Tracking is the uploading of your position coordinates so others can follow your trip progress via your LiveTrack™ or MapShare™ page. Tracking requires an active inReach® satellite subscription to function and may be started either on the inReach device or with the Garmin Messenger™ app.

Before attempting to send your tracking link, either the LiveTrack or MapShare feature should be enabled and configured in your inReach account. If you attempt to send your tracking link prior to enabling either of these features, the message "You cannot use MapShare until you give consent at explore.garmin.com to post your data online" will be sent to your inReach device and will count as one received message on your monthly invoice. To enable LiveTrack or MapShare, see Setting up LiveTrack for inReach Devices in the Garmin Messenger app or Setting up MapShare in the Garmin Messenger App.

IMPORTANT: With the Safety,1 Essential, and Enabled plans, there is an additional cost per point (varies by currency) using the Send Interval or Moving Interval on the paired inReach handheld. As an example, if your Send Interval is set to 10 minutes and you had tracking on for 1 hour, you could be charged for 7 track points (this includes a starting track point). For more details, see - Understanding Charges for Tracking on inReach Safety, Essential, and Enabled Plans.

See Related for how to start tracking on the inReach handheld.

  • Send Interval: Set to 10 minute interval by default. This setting determines how often the inReach device will send track points with its current GPS position, elevation, speed, and heading to the tracking page.

  • LiveTrack/MapShare Settings: Allows you to edit either your LiveTrack or MapShare settings (when mobile data or Wi-Fi is available), depending on which you have enabled on your account. For more details, see Related.

Select an option based on the type of phone you are using:

Android

  • Send to...: Compose a new inReach message that will include a link to either your LiveTrack or MapShare page, depending on which you have enabled on your account. If you have MapShare enabled, the password for your MapShare page will be included (if applicable). In the To field you can add one or more contacts to send the message to.

  • Share: Share your tracking link with other apps on your phone. This option only shares the tracking link and does not automatically include any password you may have set for MapShare.

  • Copy Link: Copy your tracking link and paste it into a message, email, or other app. This option only shares the tracking link and does not automatically include any password you may have set for MapShare.

iPhone

  • Select a Recipient From Your Phone's Contacts: This option requires cellular data to share either your LiveTrack or MapShare link (depending on which you have enabled on your account) using your phone's default text messaging app. This option only shares the tracking link and does not automatically include any password you may have set for MapShare.

    Selecting a Phone Contact

  • Select an App (e.g. Messenger): This option shares your tracking link with an app of your choice.
