Using TracBack on the inReach Messenger Plus

The inReach® Messenger Plus satellite communicator includes a TracBack® routing feature which is unique in that it will be available even if tracking was not started at the beginning of an activity. This makes it a useful backup option for navigation if you forget to start tracking.

How TracBack Routing Works on the inReach Messenger Plus

While the inReach Messenger Plus is powered on and connected to satellites, it automatically records its location every 10 minutes to create a hidden trip log in the background that contains tracking data. This hidden trip log is what will be used when starting a TracBack route.

IMPORTANT: Only the most recent 24 hours of tracking data is saved. The device will automatically discard any tracking data earlier than the last 24 hours.

Starting a TracBack Route

1. From the home screen, press or to scroll through the main menu options.

2. Select TRACBACK .

3. Press OK after reading through the prompts on the device:

   

   

4. Press or to scroll through different hourly time ranges in the last 24 hours, then press OK to select a range of time.

   

5. Press or to scroll through points recorded in the select hour.

   

6. Press OK to select the point you wish to navigate back to.

7. Select Follow Path to retrace the recorded path or Straight Line to navigate directly to the specified point.

The inReach Messenger Plus will now display the heading and distance remaining to navigate back to the specified point. The TracBack data can be viewed on the inReach Messenger Plus and also in the Garmin Explore app when paired with a smartphone.

If you wish to stop TracBack at any point, press OK, then select Stop TracBack.
