Pairing a Kestrel Wind Sensors to a Foretrex 901 With Applied Ballistics

The Foretrex® 901 Ballistic Edition wrist-mounted GPS navigator can pair with compatible wind sensors to update wind data in the Applied Ballistics Elite® Solver built into the Foretrex 901.

  • 5700XEL ABX Elite (Military version)
  • Calypso Ultrasonic Portable Mini Wind Meter
  • Calypso Ultrasonic Portable Solar Wind Meter

Note: The wind sensor must support BLE Bluetooth to pair with the Foretrex 901 device.


Adding a Wind Sensor

Place your wind sensor in pairing mode, then follow the steps below on the Foretrex 901 device.

  1. On the Foretrex, press PAGE until you reach the main menu.
  2. Select CONNECT.
  3. Select OTHER.
  4. Select SEARCH FOR NEW.
  5. Locate and select the wind sensor.

Using the Wind Sensor with Applied Ballistics on Your Foretrex 901 Device

  1. On the Foretrex, press PAGE until you reach the main menu.
  2. Select SETUP.
  3. Select APPLIED BALLISTICS.
  4. Select ENVIRONMENT.
  5. Choose AUTO UPDATE and ensure it is set to ON, then make changes to other items if desired. 
    • Options: Wind Speed 1, Wind Speed 2, Wind Direction, Latitude, Temperature, Amb/Stn Pressure, and Humidity.

Once paired, the wind sensor will show as connected in the sensor menu.


Having Problems Connecting?

If you are having an issue where the wind sensor will not pair, or has previously paired and worked but stopped, try the following:

  • Ensure the Foretrex has the latest software updates installed. For instructions, see - Installing Software Updates to Outdoor Handhelds.
  • Remove the battery from the sensor, hold the sensor's power button for approximately 30 seconds, then reinsert the battery in the sensor and try pairing again.
  • Allow plenty of time for the Foretrex and wind sensor to establish a Bluetooth connection.

Testing the Connection

Once the two devices are connected, perform the following steps to verify the sensor data is being transmitted to the Foretrex:

  1. On the Kestrel wind sensor:

    1. Highlight Wind, then press the red line button to enable Capture mode.
    2. Blow into the impeller to get it to spin, then press the red line button again.
    3. It should show a wind speed on the wind sensor including a direction arrow.
  2. On the Foretrex:

    1. Press PAGE until you reach the Applied Ballistics page.
    2. Look at the wind speed and direction to confirm if they match exactly what is displayed on the Kestrel wind sensor.
    3. If the wind speed and direction do not match, press ENTER on the Foretrex to open the Applied Ballistics options, then press PAGE to exit the options menu and return to the Applied Ballistics page.
    4. The wind speed and direction should now be updated.
