How Do I Use the Music Controls on an Edge 540?

Edge® 540 and Edge® 540 Solar cycling computers feature a widget or data screen that allows you to control the music on a paired smartphone. Available features include play, pause, skip to the next or previous track, and volume. This will control the last used media player on your paired smartphone. For Edge compatibility, refer to your owner's manual.

NOTE: This feature requires your Edge to be paired to the Garmin Connect™ App.

Add the Music Controls Widget

  1. Select 3 black lines.

  2. Select System.

  3. Select Widgets.

  4. Select Add Widgets.

  5. Select the Music Controls.


Accessing the Music Controls Widget

From the Home Screen

  1. Select up arrow on edge 540 until the settings widget appears.

  2. Select up arrow edge 540 or down arrow on edge 540 until the music widget appears. 

During a Ride

  1. Select Three black dots stacked vertically (upper right button).

  2. select Widgets.

  3. Select up arrow edge 540 or down arrow on edge 540 until the music widget appears. 

Using the Music Controls Widget 

  1. Once on the Music Controls widget using the steps above, Select up arrow edge 540  or down arrow on edge 540 to highlight the control you would like.

  2. When the control you would like is highlighted, select it with Three black dots stacked vertically (upper right).

Adding the Music Controls Data Screen

  1. Select White Box with 3 horizontal black lines.

  2. Select Activity Profiles.

  3. Select a Profile.

  4. Select Data Screens.

  5. Select Add Data Screen.

  6. Select Music Controls

Using the Music Controls Data Screen

  1. Scroll to the Music Controls Data Screen during a ride.

  2. Long press Three black dots stacked vertically (upper right) to enable selections.

  3. Select up arrow edge 540  or down arrow on edge 540 to highlight the control you would like. 

  4. When the control you would like is highlighted, select it with Three black dots stacked vertically (upper right).

The Music Control Widget Is Not Controlling the Last Used Media Player on My Phone

This issue requires you to ensure that all app permissions are enabled. Select a phone platform below to reveal instructions: 


Android

Step 1: Review App Permissions Settings

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Access the menu by selecting More (bottom right).

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select Phone Permissions.

  5. Select Manage Permissions.

  6. Select Permissions and ensure there is nothing listed under DENIED.

Step 2: Confirm That Notification Access Has Been Granted to the Garmin Connect App

Location of this setting will vary by phone manufacturer. If you cannot find this setting, contact your phone manufacturer for assistance. The following are general steps and may not match your particular model phone.

  1. Open the phone's Settings menu.

  2. Select the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen.

  3. Input “Access” into the search box.

  4. Select Notification Access or Access to Notifications.

    • On some phones you may need to select Special Access first.

  5. Enable access to notifications for Connect.


iOS

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Access the menu by selecting More (bottom right).

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select Phone Permissions.

  5. If any permissions are toggled off, toggle them on.
